Fourth of July Fireworks
by MBeck on Thursday, July 5th, 2007 02:00 pm GMT -4, under Uncategorized
I have obviously been on a slight break from photography. Between my career and my family (wife and 2 kids) I simply have no time anymore. And to be quite honest, I am rarely anywhere interesting or worth taking photographs.
But that changed on the 4th of July this year. I went to an amazing party at a friend’s house. They had a great fireworks show at the end of the party. And I took my first set of fireworks pictures ever. Hope you enjoy them. I thought they turned out quite nice.
Light Write

So this is one of the more entertaining photos. And this is straight from the camera, no editing or tricks. I had my camera on a remote shutter release. I held open the shutter and used two LED keychains to “draw” in the air with light. It takes some practice. You have to do it all backwards so that it shows up the right way in the camera. And you have to do it all with your ‘mind’s eye’ to picture where you are drawing, since you don’t see what you’ve drawn until the picture is done. Hope you enjoy, this one was lots of fun.

As you all know, I own a large photography company specializing in children portraiture and action sports and of course various other endeavors (directories, corporate shots, sports posters, etc.). I’m sure it’s no surprise that these areas are not my passion. But they are what pays the bills. Nobody wants to buy a picture of a sunset or a close up of some flower. While they do sell every now and then as prints, they definitely won’t keep a roof over my head. But that’s the kind of photography I like. If all I did was the “business” end of things in photography, I would not enjoy my hobby. Taking pictures of 400 kids in a day is not fun to me. Of course if it was fun it wouldn’t be called work
So here is my site, dedicated to the photography I enjoy. These are the photos that made the “cut”. All good photographers will tell you that there’s always a hundred or so photographs behind every good photograph. At least on the “artsy fartsy” side of photography. These are the photos that earned my seal of approval. I am very self criticizing in my work. So it’s a great honor for a photo to make it into this category. There’s times that I go to a location (mountains etc.) and take hundreds of photos, and not a single one makes the cut. Of course I keep them, and my wife and kids love most of them. But like I said, it takes a lot for a photo to stand out to me enough to show it off to the world.
Hope you enjoy my site. I do this work just so others can enjoy my photographs and feel what I felt as I took the picture.
